Samantha Michell
Full time artist reinterpreting the very act of painting with striking results using ink and color to create highly detailed line drawings that entwine complex narratives inside organic worlds.
Her work tugs at our often-clouded perceptions of memory through a silent, somatosensory system.
For her, line and form have always been ways to explore an emotionally charged, stratospheric terrain.
Samantha's fluid forms express a subtle intelligence and energy resolution corresponding to old art practices while communicating a contemporary approach to existence.
Fascinated by the line’s continuity and its power as a relational device that divides and unifies, she developed a personal style that from her vision of contemporary art, incorporates new forms and themes that elevate and reshape art practices beyond their traditional origins.
With a rich palette of tones and timbres and different paintbrushes, she experiments with several techniques, displaying a delicate balance between figurative and abstract art. The interplay of conventional and modern elements broadly defines her body of works until today.
Following her instincts about this fascinating medium, she decided to explore painting further at the School of Visual Arts in New York, at the Escuela de Artes Visuales de Yucatán and at the Manhattan Graphic Center.
Unlike most artists, she has spent her life living in between the United States and México. Her inspiration and creative upbringing flow from this background as well as from the natural elements surrounding her.
Samantha Michell was born in Chicago Illinois in 1989.
She currently works and resides in Mérida, Yucatán, México.
