Gabriel Ramírez Aznar

One of the most important painters in México who contributed with the “BREAKAWAY GENERATION” (Generación de la Ruptura), to transform the conception of contemporary art and to unleash its possibilities in this country. His aesthetic proposal challenges the Mexican School of Painting and is interested in universal themes and values such as freedom and internationalism.

His expression lays on the conviction that the relationships between the pure pictorial elements constitute themes in themselves and their treatments are not conclusive.

He considers that the most valuable thing in his painting is the fortuitous discovery, the free flow of creativity, and the ability to suggest and stimulate the viewer to participate in the interpretation of the work.

Ramirez’s painting contains a very personal, naturally intuitive, and spontaneous grammar. The author approaches the blank canvas without sketches or diagrams, guided by intuition in a process of experimentation where the mere act of painting dominates everything.

His compositions tend alternatively to be centrifugal or centripetal, that is, their forms in dynamic play will sometimes obey forces of confluence and concentration and sometimes dispersion in space to extreme tensions between attraction and rejection.

Art Museums in México and abroad display his work, which is also part of important private collection in his country and around the world.

He has been the recipient of various national and international awards.

Currently living in Mérida, Yucatán where he was born in 1938.

"A painter can only relate to himself, to what is in him and around him ..."
